Jaguar Launches World-First Virtual Reality Centre

Jaguar has today announced the opening of its new 'Virtual Reality Centre' at the Design and Engineering Centre in Gaydon. This should allow Jaguar engineers to easily visualise new models both inside and out in life-like conditions, which will help them speed up development times on new models massively, and really give them an edge in bringing more great looking cars like the Jaguar XF to the market quicker.

Engineers and designers are able to see and interact with life-size, three-dimensional models of vehicles and components. The system reduces the need for physical prototypes, saving both time and money.

Jaguar say this is the most advanced system of its kind in the world, with nothing else coming close to the level of detail being seen, at almost photo realistic depth. This comes from using 8 hugely expensive Sony projectors, each capable of producing an image at 4 times the level of detail of the latest high def TV's, combined with a pair of 3D glasses. It even allows different surfaces to become transparent, allowing engineers and designers to be able to see 'through' surfaces if required, X-Ray specs style.

Brian Waterfield, Jaguar Land Rover Principal Engineer and Virtual Reality Centre Manager said: "Jaguar Land Rover has taken another giant step forward in its thrust for technological advancement; enhancing its design and engineering process to enable quicker, more robust decision making. This facility offers a different level of engineering, one that will help future our products to meet the demand of an ever changing market place."

This world first is a collaboration between Sony, Sun Microsystems and ICIDO and Midlands-based HoloVis International Ltd.

Stuart Hetherington, Managing Director, HoloVis International comments: “We spent just over 18 months working closely with Jaguar Land Rover and our chosen system partners to design, develop, test and benchmark the proposed solution prior to the project being approved. This gave everyone the confidence in the unique technological solution we were going to create, as well as our capability in delivering such an advanced turn-key system of this nature. This really is a world’s-first in this industry and we’re proud to have delivered this for such a prestigious client."

Another step closer to a Star Trek style holodeck, and that virtual girlfriend...
