2009 Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500

Both the F-150 and Ram 1500 are being introduced for 2009 with major overhauls, and both Ford and Dodge are airing TV commercials saying they have the tougher truck.

The market for these trucks has been cut in half during the last 4 years, with nearly 3 million pickups selling in 2004 and a projected 1.6 million this year. Which pickup is truly the toughest and most deserving of your cash?

I’m going to get to the bottom of this and tell you.

First, the 2009 Ford F-150:

The 2009 F-150 borrows it’s looks from last year’s Super Duty truck and creates one massive and intimidating front end, with a body to match. It’s offered in a near-endless array of trims with prices beginning around $20K and sailing all the way across the $40K barrier. The big news here is that all trim levels have a base 4.6L V8 engine. No more V6’s for the ol’ F-150!

Step up to the 5.4 V8 though and get slightly better fuel economy, to the tune of 15/20. Not bad for a mighty truck!

Innovation in the F-150 includes a trailer towing package that monitors your trailer and adjusts itself if it senses sway, giving you a level of trailer control never seen before. Speaking of trailers: the F-150 can tow up to 11,300 pounds and offers a payload capacity of 3,030 pounds.

Ride quality though is where the tradeoffs may come, as Ford continues to rely on the traditional rear leaf spring system. Why not though, since no self-respecting truck company would ever build a truck with sissy coil springs. Right?

Enter the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500:

It’s true; they broke the cardinal rule of truck-dom and are using coil springs on the rear. Albeit massive coil springs, but still…

Well not to worry! Dodge took a risk and it looks like everything’s going to work out just fine, though at the cost of not matching Ford’s tow numbers. 

Ram is offered with a 3.7L V6, probably for under $20K. Prices and trim levels of course multiply from there, ending upwards of $40K for the top of the line version. Dodge’s 390 horsepower 5.7L V8 Hemi will tow a max of 9,100 pounds and achieve gas mileage of 13/18.

But those coil springs will provide a ride quality never before felt in a pickup.

So which truck should you buy? Well OK, I’ll let you tell me:

Better MPG and higher tow rating of the F-150, or a smoother ride and decent tow capacity with the Ram 1500?

Under the skin of the 2010 Acura NSX

We don't know what the next Acura (Honda) NSX will ultimately look like, but we do know that it will have a 5.5-liter V10 throwing down 560 hp through a torque-vectoring SW-AWD setup. The folks over at Auto Express have a cutaway view of the NSX's gizzards, and what lurks beneath the creased and chevroned skin of the next do-it-all-faster supercar could be good for a few extra heartbeats. We do hope, however, that these exterior renderings are quite a ways off. Otherwise, it might not be so bad if Acura offers a cutaway version of the actual car so that you don't have to see its body, because even under the camo, the new NSX is shaping up to be um, homely.

Yeah, the ‘70 RR from Rough Cut is just a wee bit less famous than, say The Bandit. In fact, while I remember that there were a bunch of cars involved, I don’t remember a Plymouth at all. It has been a while since I last saw it on the Sunday afternoon movie feature, however.

Needless to say, the provenance (if it can be established) probably won’t add much when Vantertook sells it as part of the Todd Alley collection in Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 30. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t half-a-dozen interesting cars, and a bunch of tools and parts, in what looks like an estate sale. Plus: The rare Sam Posey rearend option, which is apparently part of an offroad package.

If these are refurbished, they’re home jobs, and there’s work to be undone - check the auction site for more photos. But the auctioneer clearly doesn’t know anything about cars, so a fun driver might be had cheap here. Let’s hope they don’t think they’ve got gold, though, because these things are rough. Only the RR and GTO are candidates to break $20,000, and we’d want to see some PHS documents for the Goat. I’d say the Trans Am and Charger, too, but the 318 and primer don’t do the Dodge any favors, and the TA has 109,000 miles.

It’s also a little surprising at this point to find two Mopars with what are probably the correct 318 and 383s respectively, after so many of those got Hemi-ized.

While the U.S. auto industry supplies millions of people with jobs, the truth is that industry is collapsing. All 3 major U.S. automakers are on the brink of financial disaster with their only hope being a federal bailout.

But for Chrysler, there’s hope from Hyundai.

With talks of the grand GM/Chrysler merger now out the window, Hyundai, that little carmaker from South Korea, is poised to sweep in and buy out Chrysler. Or at least part of it.

Just a couple of years ago the idea of Hyundai taking over Chrysler would have been laughable. Now though, it just might make sense.

Had GM succeeded in their bid to takeover Chrysler, it might have worked to keep the company name around but I doubt it would have saved any jobs. A GM that consists of Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, GMC, Saab, Buick, Hummer and Saturn can’t even hold on, so adding Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep would only add redundancy and ultimately lead to massive layoffs. Just like a bankruptcy would.

The Hyundai scenario is a little different, because of the redundancy issue. It’s highly unlikely that the Chrysler of today will remain intact because there are pieces of it that will appeal to other automakers. If Hyundai doesn’t absorb all of Chrysler, it could buy Jeep. Nissan has mentioned buying Dodge. 

Under a scenario like this, jobs could stay in America though they’d be managed from an office in Asia. And the Chrysler as we know it would be gone.

Cerberus Financial, the current owner of Chrysler, has said they are not interested in selling pieces of the company. But if they are at all interested in saving American jobs, I think they’ll have to.

I ask you: Are you more concerned with saving Chrysler, or with saving American jobs?
