SVT’s Future Lineup: 1st 2007 Ford Shelby GT500

112_0505_02l2007_ford_shelby_gt_500drivers_side_view_diagram.jpg

1. Front hood line raised one inch: allows larger grille opening
2. Hood scoops vent under hood air buildup; look will change slightly on production model
3. Snake badge resembles 1960s ver, but is redesigned in cast of brushed aluminum
4. Side scoops deemed unnecessary, as they would’ve been nonfunctional
5. Glass quarter windows- no changes, as this look was pioneered on 1966 Shelby
6. Rear spoiler reduces lift and adds attitude
7. Front splitter keeps nose pinned at speed
8. 18-inch wheels pick up Ford GT flavor; optional 19s likely; rotors and calipers larger, too
9. GT 500 stripes almost identical to 1965-1968 look
10. Rocker panel rendered in satin black; makes car looks longer, thinner in profile
11. Rear fascia is lower than stock GT’s; incorporates functional under-tray diffuser

With the absence of the 2005 and 2006 SVT Mustang, the phase out of the SVT Focus and the abrupt halting of the next-gen Lightning truck development, I was left wondering what the Ford SVT (Special Vehicle Team) has up their sleeves with the recent GT500 about to be spotted on a road near you.

SVT’s current lineup of exactly zero models is expected to grow by several new models within a few years’ time. The Shelby Mustang (GT500) is first up, to be followed by an SVT Ford Fusion which will tout a turbocharged engine, six-speed tranny, and share the Mazda 6 Speed all-wheel drive system.

The Shelby-Spec GT500 engine is an evolution of the SVT Cobra engine, but will bear at least 450 some horses, an iron block, aluminum head, four valves, Roots-blown 4.6L, with 1 critical difference: It has finally received a displacement increase to 5.4 liters. Boo YAH!

Hau Tai-Tang, the 2005 Mustang’s chief program engineer, was handed the reins at SVT last fall and had some interesting things to say.

Breaking News: Toyota's Tundra is Outselling the GMC Sierra Pickup?!

tundra1.jpg
It has already been reported that the sales of GM's new GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado pickups are not selling as well as the automaker had hoped. Recently GM also announced that production of their full-size pickups is going to be scaled back due to slow sales. Toyota's full-size Tundra is also new this year and has had some issues as well, which are mainly due to engine quality issues and crash test results. Well now it looks like Toyota's once ignored full-size pickup is the fourth best-selling full-size half-ton pickup in the US, narrowly squeezing out the GMC Sierra.

Wrightspeed X1 Electric Supercar

x1-front-34-high.jpg

Ian Wright, founder and CEO of Wrightspeed, showed off the X1 in San Francisco Thursday night at a gathering of the Business Association Italy America at Club Sportiva - a sort of exotic country club for car enthusiasts. Watching and listening to this video one would assume that all the roaring would be from the X1 literally destroying the Ferrari off the line, but in fact all that noise is all from the Ferrari, and the only noise made by the X1 is minimal screeching of it’s tires!

The X1 prototype is a concept car, and a test platform. It is not a production car, and never will be. It’s a proof-of-concept vehicle that will lead to a production car in the future. Wrightspeed’s strategy is to bring efficiency to high-end, big-margin gas guzzlers that garner big profit margins. During a 20-minute presentation, Wright said that by capturing 10 percent of the gas-guzzler market, more fuel would be saved than by turning 100 percent of already-efficient gasoline-powered cars electric.

To build this prototype, Wrightspeed looked for the best of the best, in today’s technology. They chose AC Propulsion 3-phase AC induction motor and inverter – the highest power/weight ratio system available.

For the chassis, Wright turned to Ariel, in Somerset. Ariel has created one of the world’s sexiest and raciest F1 inspired legal street cars, as well as the quickest and lightest chassis on the road.

Specifications:

  • Power: 236hp at the motor shaft using a 3-phase AC induction motor
  • Torque: 182 ft lbs torque at the motor shaft, from 0 rpm to 6,000 rpm
  • Weight: 1536 lbs
  • Max RPM: 13,300 rpm
  • Fuel: 25 kWhr Lithium Ion battery pack
  • Suspension: Inboard Bilstein race dampers, Eibach 2-stage springs
  • Clutch: No clutch, single gear ratio 8.25:1, with Limited Slip Differential.
  • Wheels: Dymag Magnesium Alloys
  • Cost: Roughly $120,000 USD
  • Performance:

  • 0-60mph: ~3 seconds
  • Standing quarter mile: ~11.5 seconds
  • Top speed 112mph (electronically limited)
  • Mileage: >100 miles in urban use. Energy consumption 200 WHr/mile in urban use, equivalent to 170 mpg (33,705 WHr/gallon)
  • Lateral g: 1.3 (crazyness)
  • Braking g: 1.2
  • Watch as the Wrightspeed X1 Destroys a Ferrari 360 and Porsche Carrera GT.
